Nebraska Corn Growers Association President Dan Wesely is hoping for a positive outcome with the North American Free Trade Agreement renegotiations which begin in a couple of weeks. He says it’s positive Kenneth Smith Ramos has been chosen as Mexico’s chief negotiator. Wesely says because Ramos once served at the trade and NAFTA office of the Mexican embassy in Washington D.C. means he’s a familiar face and should be easy to work with.

He’s hoping they’ll be able to solve the recent rift between Mexico and the U.S. on corn and be able to ensure the Mexicans the U.S. can reliably supply them with corn.

Wesely says he thinks negotiators will be able to come together on most of the agricultural issues with dairy being the major sticking point.

Besides serving at Mexico’s embassy in Washington D..C., Ramos also worked in the past as Mexico’s economy minister and with their agriculture department. He also was on the negotiating team that worked on the original NAFTA agreement in 1993.
