Corn growers are hopeful that the Biden Administration and the U-S Trade Representative’s office will be able to change the mind of the Mexican president before 2024.  That’s the deadline for when the Mexican president has said Mexico will no longer accept any U-S corn with biotechnology traits, or GMO corn.  Mexico is the number one customer of U-S corn, and approximately 95 percent of all corn grown in the United States contains biotechnology traits.  Iowa Corn Growers Association president Denny Friest says the buyers in Mexico want U-S corn, but it is the president that has declared no more U-S corn.

Friest says corn with biotechnology traits, or GMO corn is safe, and farmers have harvested GMO corn for the last couple of decades, as a means to reduce pesticides.  Friest says if Mexico doesn’t change its mind on the issue, the U-S will take action against our southern neighbor.  The Iowa Corn Growers president says the U-S is looking at other potential markets to make up for any potential loss.
