The Trump administration is hoping to get completion of the North American Free Trade Agreement remake sometime this month or next. U.S. Chief Ag Trade Negotiator Gregg Doud says they’re making more progress with Mexico and not so much with Canada. South Dakota Corn Growers Association President Troy Knecht says he’s encouraged they’re making progress with Mexico as they’re an important corn customer of the U.S.
He says now Mexico needs U.S. corn as they’re working to develop their own ethanol industry.
Knecht says he’s hoping they get NAFTA done as quickly as possible.
While discussions with Mexico have been positive, the sticking point with Canada remains their dairy and poultry supply management programs.
