The U.S. Department of Agriculture has released their final rule that will require companies to create labels or use technology to inform consumers about food ingredients from bioengineered crops or fish. National Corn Grower’s Association members are pleased with the biotech labeling rules. South Dakota Corn Growers President Troy Knecht says it’s a consistent and transparent rule that’s good for consumers as well as farmers.
He says USDA’s rule will help eliminate any confusion consumers have about biotech products.
Knecht says they’ve been calling for a national rule rather than several different statewide rules., and this should help consumers grow in their acceptance of biotechnology.
This rule will allow consumers to see labels, logos or Q-R codes as well as other means for identifying bioengineered foods. The rule goes into effect in January of 2022.
