Corn farmers are pleased with this week’s announcement that the U.S. and Mexico have reached a preliminary trade agreement and they’re optimistic Mexico will sign the pact. Under the deal tariffs on all ag products would stay at zero. National Corn Growers Association President Kevin Skunnes says that’s welcome news.
The two countries have also agreed on key sanitary and phytosanitary rule changes and more favorable treatment of biotech products.
Skunnes anticipates Mexico will sign the deal and then it moves into a 90-day review period. However, he says lawmakers are supportive of the renegotiated deal.
He says Canada is another important part of the agreement and is the number two market for U.S. ethanol and they’re also a strong customer of U.S. DDGs.
