The Trump administration plans to proceed with steps to protect U.S. growers of seasonal produce from imports from Mexico. They’ll be asking the International Trade Commission to form an inter-agency group for possible investigations and to take action. Mexico is the leading export customer of U.S. Corn. South Dakota Corn Grower’s Executive Director Lisa Richardson says so far there’s been no pushback against U.S. corn from Mexico.
She says its positive the U.S. is in the USMCA trade agreement with both Canada and Mexico so hopefully that would help protect U.S. corn exports. Richardson says they’re waiting to see what the next steps may be.
Richardson says while the produce growers have some legitimate concerns, there’s been no indications of any possible retaliation by Mexico against any U.S. commodity.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said President Trump recognizes the challenges faced by American farmers and is committed to promoting and securing fair trade and a level playing field for all American producers.
