Wednesday the Environmental Protection Agency released its Renewable Fuel Standard Volume levels for corn based ethanol for 2018 and biodiesel for 2019. National Biodiesel Board’s Director of Federal Policy Anne Steckel was disappointed the EPA flatlined the biodiesel level at 2.1 billion gallons which was below their request of 2.75 billion gallons.
The volume for corn based or conventional biofuel was maintained at the 15 billion gallon cap. South Dakota Corn Grower’s Association Executive Director Lisa Richardson says that was positive but she says there’s some uncertainty regarding cellulosic and advanced ethanol.
Steckel says the EPA volumes are particularly disturbing given the fact that biodiesel plants are already running under capacity.
Steckel says the administration has talked about wanting to protect and grow the RFS and if they want to accomplish that they need to up the biodiesel volume levels.
