New research shows that consumers are backing away from higher priced cage-free eggs in favor of conventional eggs. A report from Marketplace Sustainability indicates that despite the wave of companies going cage-free the premium priced eggs are not selling well. That’s not surprising to Ken Klippen, President of the National Association of Egg Farmers.
Klippen says despite the premium price for cage-free eggs, they are not healthier than those from chickens raised in cages.
He says not only are retail egg prices down from a year ago, so is the farm price or what the grower is getting.
The latest research has prompted some producers to delay or even cancel their orders for cage-free equipment from leading providers of cage-free housing.
