South Dakota Soybean’s Hungry for Truth Initiative hosted two panels Thursday at the Ag PHD Field Day. One featured consumers talking about buying trends and the questions they have about agriculture.
Sioux Falls Mom and consumer April Syverson says consumers need to get more informed about the use of various technologies in farming, so they aren’t swayed by misinformation on food labels.

Steffanie Holtrop own medical and parenting magazines in Sioux Falls. She says consumers are confused by the labeling on food products.

Sioux Falls Mom and owner of Oh My Cupcakes, Melissa Johnson, says she’s gained a different perspective about farming through the initiative and feels safe about the U.S. food supply because farmers take care of their land and animals.

Another panel featured soybean farmers and Iowa blogger Michelle Miller. She’s known as The Farm Babe and uses social media to inform consumers about the facts behind modern farming. She says farmers need to get engaged with consumers.

All the panelists agree that because misinformation about farming is easily spread through social media, education is critical for consumers.
