Sioux Falls consumers got to meet one of the farmers behind their food last night at a tour of the Dennis Steineke Farm near Hartford. At the Farms After Five Event hosted by Ag United participants had the opportunity to see how cattle and pigs are raised. Steineke says its important consumers see how modern livestock operations are run and how their food is produced.
He also showed participants how he cares for his animals, especially during the recent heat.
Holly Swee with the South Dakota Beef Industry Council was also on hand to talk to consumers about how beef produced with growth promotants or implants is more efficient and results in a safe product.
Nicole Barker of Sioux Falls says she grew up in rural Minnesota and wanted to see how farming has changed and visit with one of the local farmers that produces her food.
The next Farms After Five Tour is next Tuesday at BLAC-X Farms and Cottonwood Ridge Dairy both of Garretson.
