Consumers Learn About Farming and Food Labeling at Expo for Her

Thousands of Sioux Falls area consumers learned about farming, food labeling and the safety of biotech crops at this weekend’s Expo for Her. The South Dakota Soybean Research and Promotion Council sponsored a cooking seminar and talk on food labeling conducted by Coleman, South Dakota farm wife and blogger Morgan Kontz.

She says food labeling can be very confusing and misleading for consumers especially terms like grass-fed, hormone-free or antibiotic-free. So, her goal is to provide some clarity.

Kontz says the most confusing labels are those claiming a product is non-GMO, when it never was to begin with. She says that puts as stigma on those foods and gives consumers the idea that products containing GMOs are not safe.

The Expo for Her was also a great opportunity for the farm women involved in the South Dakota Soybean Hungry for Truth initiative to connect with thousands of women and talk about food and farming.
