South Dakota Congresswoman Kristi Noem says she has mixed feelings about writing the next farm bill early. House Ag Ranking member Collin Peterson has suggested moving up the timeline for the program rewrite in response to low commodity prices. Noem agrees that the program has had its faults.

She says the Committee has discussed starting hearings in January of 2017. However, she cautions those pushing for an early replacement to farm programs that opening the farm bill early could result in unintended consequences.

And Noem is concerned about writing and passing a farm bill when so many members of Congress are already against the bill.

She says they plan on laying the groundwork by having farm and commodity groups be part of the early discussion.
