The number of suicides among younger veterans has increased “substantially,” according to a report released by the VA. Minnesota Congressman Tim Walz a ranking member of The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs shared a story with members about how the Minneapolis VA may have failed a Minnesota Marine. After realizing he was suicidal, 33-year-old Justin Miller checked into the VA. After three days, Walz says Justin left the hospital with no discharge plan and had never even met with the VA’s suicide prevention coordinator for a consultation
Walz says no one will ever know if what they could have done at the VA — would have saved Justin’s life
The latest statistics show that 45 of every 100,000 veterans ages 18-34 committed suicide in 2016 – up from around 40 a year earlier.
