The Direct Act introduced last week by South Dakota Congressman Dusty Johnson if approved will allow state inspected meat to be sold across state lines and allow producers to sell directly to consumers. Johnson says another advantage of his legislation is that it will create numerous small processor opportunities for entrepreneurs.
He says a prime example of what he’s talking about could be done in South Dakota.
Johnson says he hasn’t heard any significant opposition to the DIRECT ACT legislation and that there are several vehicles for getting it over the finish line.
The DIRECT Act would amend retail exemptions to allow processors, butchers, or other retailers to sell normal retail quantities of State Inspected Meat online to consumers across state lines.
