U-S Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa was able to get a bill passed just prior to the legislative session ending last year dealing with the foreign ownership of U-S farmland. Grassley was joined by Wisconsin Democrat Tammy Baldwin on the measure. Grassley says the bill is an extension of legislation that he got passed during his time at the U-S House of Representatives. Grassley says the new bill requires foreign owners of farmland to report to the USDA that they own U-S farmland. Grassley says he is particularly concerned about Chinese investments of US farmland. The Iowa Republican says food security is national security, and he pointed to the example of a Chinese purchase of farmland in North Dakota next to a U-S military installment.
