House Agriculture Committee Ranking member Collin Peterson of Minnesota expects lawmakers to get some pressure during the lame duck session to address the sagging farm economy. He says the sooner they start writing the farm bill the more money they’ll have to work with. Minnesota Farm Bureau President Kevin Paap says the next farm bill is part of the solution, depending on how Congress provides assistance.
Congressman Peterson is afraid many farmers won’t be able to obtain financing for the next growing season because of falling revenue due to low commodity prices. Paap says as a result, Congress has their work cut out for them as they craft the new farm safety net.
Paap says beyond the farm bill, getting trade agreements approved is a key for improving commodity prices.
Paap says his group intends to work with Congress during the lame duck on immediate fixes for the ailing farm economy.
