Canadian Food Inspection Agency officials say a cow euthanized in February with B.S.E. may have contracted the disease from feed. The Black Angus cow was five years old at the time of the diagnosis, born less than two years after the enhanced feed ban was implemented. R CALF CEO Bill Bullard says Canada has actually had more than 19 cases of BSE with this latest report and he has several concerns about that.
Canadian officials says the results of their ongoing surveillance program continue to confirm that BSE remains under effective control. Bullard disagrees and says it’s concerning contaminated feed continues to be prevalent in Canada.
Bullard says says the USDA acted irresponsibly by opening the U.S. Canadian border to cattle trade earlier before preventative BSE steps were put in.
He says the CFIA isn’t testing enough livestock to determine the true prevalence of the disease.
