A community in northeast Nebraska is launching an effort to generate electricity using only the flows of the Missouri River. South Sioux City’s city administrator Lance Hedquist came up with the idea and says it should work.
South Sioux City is applying for a 290-thousand-dollar environmental grant to place six anchored turbines in the river.
Hedquist says the city’s share of the costs will be offset by the power generated.
The city will partner with Green Star Gasifiers on the effort. The Missouri River turbines are one of several ventures the city is planning with the company.
