South Dakota Common Ground members struck a conversation about food production with Sioux Falls area consumers attending the Expo for Her event this weekend. Peggy Greenway of Mt. Vernon raises hogs and beef cattle and says the Expo was a great way to talk to thousands of women about farming.
Greenway says one of the most common questions she gets is about the use of growth hormones in meat production.
Dawn Scheier raises corn and soybeans on her farm near Salem and is working to combat negative reports in popular and social media about the safety of GMOs. She says they’ve grown biotech crops for 19 years and as a mother she wouldn’t use the technology if it wasn’t safe for her family.
Scheier says the other myth she commonly has to dispel is that 97-percent of U.S. farms are family owned and not corporations.
