Commercial Cellulosic Ethanol Plant Opens

The grand opening was held in Emmetsburg, Iowa yesterday for the first commercial scale cellulosic ethanol plant in the country. Project LIBERTY is a joint venture between Royal DSM and POET DSM. POET Founder Jeff Broin says the plant will convert the husks, cobs and a minimal amount of stalk into the advanced biofuel.
Broin says there is tremendous potential for cellulosic ethanol production, providing there is proper government support and push to develop the infrastructure.
Broin says their research shows using corn stover for a feed stock in cellulosic ethanol is the most efficient…especially when paired up with an existing corn ethanol plant to utilize the excess energy from cellulosic production.
