Bitterly cold temperatures and subfreezing wind chills are predicted to continue over the Northern Plains for the next week, which will stress livestock. SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly says during the cold snap it’s important to keep animals sheltered from the wind and provide adequate bedding to help them stay warm.
He says producers also need to make sure farm equipment is working so they can get feed and water to livestock. Daly reminds producers not to overlook their bulls and keep them protected from prolonged cold.
Daly says any adjustments to livestock rations should be made gradually.
Daly says producers also need to make sure livestock have an adequate water supply.
