The change in weather this week in the region to much colder conditions means livestock producers need to keep a close eye on their animals. That’s the advice of SDSU Extension Veterinarian Dr. Russ Daly. He says to watch for signs of stress.
Daly says producers need to make sure that there’s good ventilation for animals inside, as well as good water sources for livestock whether inside or outside.
He says wind breaks should be provided for livestock outside especially for younger animals. Daly also says as a general rule it’s advisable to adjust the ration.
He says if it’s 20 degrees outside, animals will need 20-percent more feed in the ration to meet maintenance requirements. However, Daly advises making those ration adjustments gradually. He says younger dairy calves may also need additional milk.
