Nebraska students would be required to take a civics test under a legislative proposal before lawmakers.
State Senator Julie Slama of Peru says it’s a good idea.
The test would be based on the test given to immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship in the U.S.
Slama says that the proposal would enhance current curriculum standards.
The Nebraska Education Association opposes the proposal. Teachers union representatives say that curriculum decisions should be handled by the Nebraska Education Department.
