The Yankton City Commission has decided to make a major change to solid waste services, and move to single stream recycling.
City Manager Amy Nelson says they brought a proposal to the board to ask for direction…..

The cost to upgrade equipment, and add recycling containers would be about eight hundred fifty thousand dollars. City Finance Manager Al Viereck says the monthly cost increase would range between a dollar eighty four, to two dollars fifty four cents. He says the city may save more by moving to the single stream….

The mixed recycled material would be taken to a location in Sioux Falls. Currently city residents must separate materials before they are taken.

Commissioner Dave Carda cautioned the board about moving on the solid waste rates before they know how much water rates will go up…..

The board voted seven to two to move ahead with the single stream recycling.
