The city of Sioux Falls is applying a new soy based concrete sealant to repair some of the streets. The product is called Poreshield and technical lead Paul Imbrock says the soy methyl ester base makes it spread thinner than water so it penetrates into concrete and can self-seal if there is damage in pavement joints.
He says since Poreshield is soy based that makes it a greener, more environmentally friendly option for road and bridge repairs.
South Dakota Soybean Executive Director Jerry Schmitz says the product was developed by Perdue University researchers with the support of soybean checkoff dollars.
Poreshield is being used by state Departments of Transportation across the U.S. to fix not only pavement joints, but bridge decks and sidewalks. It’s also being used by homeowners to repair driveways and even patios.
