The trade war with China has escalated with the U.S. imposing another 10-percent tariff on $200 billion of Chinese imports, to ramp up to 25-percent by January 1. North Dakota Senator Heidi Heitkamp says the President’s approach to trade is not working.
Agriculture has suffered under the trade war, especially soybean producers which have seen lower futures prices, historically wide basis levels and some elevators not even bidding for their product. Heitkamp says this is nothing short of a crisis.
And Heitkamp says even if the trade war is resolved China may not come back to buy soybeans and other U.S. farm goods or at least not at the level they once did.
China has announced they will retaliate with $60 billion of tariffs on U.S. products.
