Smithfield Foods Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Sullivan says China is set to ramp up its purchases of U.S. pork. That coming on the heels of logistics headaches easing and China in the process of butchering millions of its own animals. South Dakota Pork Producers Council President Lester Moeller says that’s very positive news and America’s producers have an abundant supply to sell to them.

Moeller says China is limited by their own ability to produce pork so their market holds promise for U.S. producers now and in the future.

Recent estimates of hog liquidation in China are as high as 6 million sows. In addition hog prices in China earlier this month were double that in the U.S. with that price gap expected to grow.
