WATERTOWN, S.D. – Two Watertown residents are facing felony charges after a child abuse investigation that began October 24th.

Police were called to Prairie Lakes Hospital, where a 7-year-old was being treated for extensive bruising and possible internal injuries.

The child’s mother, 30-year-old Taylor Ann Merkel, initially claimed the injuries came from a fall down the stairs. But medical staff said the bruising pattern didn’t match that explanation.

Merkel now faces a Class 4 felony charge of child abuse.

Also charged is 25-year-old Davon Scott Walton, accused of aggravated assault by strangulation and cruelty to a minor.

Court records show Walton was previously reported to Child Protective Services in July after allegedly placing a pillow over the child’s face.

Following his arrest, Walton violated a no-contact order by calling Merkel four times, leading to additional misdemeanor charges and a motion to revoke his bond.

Both suspects are being held on $5,000 bonds.

Authorities say the investigation is ongoing.
