Changes to the federal food program Women, Infant, and Children or better known as WIC may have some negative consequences to the dairy industry.  USDA has proposed to drop some of the dairy provisions with the WIC program.  Matt Herrick serves as the senior vice president for the International Dairy Foods Association.  He says the WIC program serves approximately six million people each month.  Herrick says WIC is a food-specific nutritional supplemental program.  Herrick says the International Dairy Foods Association, and other dairy organizations have spoken to USDA officials to explain how the reductions will hurt those people that are dependent on the WIC program.  Herrick says dairy officials conducted a survey among 500 plus users of the WIC program to learn of the negative actions of the proposed new rules.  Herrick says the USDA has said they want to shift some of the funding to fruits and vegetables.  However, Herrick says the USDA’s own research says 90 percent of the nation’s people don’t get enough dairy products in their daily diet.
