The World Trade Organization has been getting complaints about the aid money U.S. farmers are getting from the government. China, India, the European Union, Ukraine and Australia are all criticizing USDA’s market facilitation program. Center for Rural Affairs Policy Director Jonathan Hladik says the market facilitation payments are badly needed and that the WTO situation just creates more uncertainty for America’s farmers and ranchers.
He says the foreign countries criticism is something U.S. farmers can’t do anything about.
Australia calls the U.S. aid a dangerous precedent that could distort world markets. Hladik says it’s important to remember that government intervention in open markets create a lot of problems.
Several WTO member countries are fearful the U.S. will give its farmers a third trade assistance package next year.
