The Nebraska Legislature’s Revenue Committee on a 6 to 0 vote approved an amended version of LB 289 and sent it to the full floor for debate. The Property Tax Relief Measure calls for raising the sales tax one half cent. Center for Rural Affairs Policy Manager Jordan Rasmussen says there were several positive provision in the amended legislation.

She says the legislation also calls for broadening of the sales tax base which will help in providing property tax relief.

Rasmussen says once the bill is heard on the floor, more compromises will be needed in order to get enough support to be able to overcome an expected veto by Governor Pete Ricketts. As He’s against raising any other taxes to pay for property tax relief.

LB 289 calls for boosting state aid to K-12 schools by nearly $ 500 million.
