Generational farms were honored Thursday during the first day of the South Dakota State Fair. South Dakota farms that have remained in the same family for at least 100 years, or more, were recognized by South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hunter Roberts and South Dakota Farm Bureau president Scott Vanderwal. This year 29 South Dakota farms reached the milestone of remaining in the same family for 100 years. Vanderwal says there were 16 farms honored for achieving 125 years in the same family, and three farms that have remained in the family for 150 years. He says those farms now join the growing list of farms that have been previously honored. The South Dakota Farm Bureau president says the program began in 1976. Vanderwal explains the requirements for a South Dakota farm to be officially recognized. South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hunter Roberts says the program speaks will for South Dakota agriculture.
