Center For Rural Affairs Wants Property Tax Relief And Incentives Bills Passed

Iowa state lawmakers went back into session this week and Nebraska’s State Senators return to Unicameral July 20. Both have been on hiatus due to the pandemic. Center for Rural Affairs Policy Director Johnathan Hladik says Nebraska’s waiting until July because taxes are due July 15 and they’ll have more data to work with then. He says CFRA sees two major issues for State Senators, Property tax relief and a large business incentive bill.

He says if they put a new business incentive program in place, that likely will be costlier. Hladik says it’s critical they pass a property tax relief measure although that will be challenging.

Hladik says now with the property tax relief ballot measure pulled, that puts more pressure on legislators to get something approved before they adjourn and get it signed by the Governor.

Hladik expects Iowa lawmakers to have discussions over how to spend federal CARES Act money, some that will go to agriculture and some for other needs.
