USDA Census of Ag Confirms Lower Net Farm Income in Nebraska

Nebraska farmers and ranchers have been struggling economically the last several years and that was confirmed in the latest USDA Census of Agriculture. It showed from 2012 to 2017 net farm income in the state fell 19 percent. Nebraska Farm Bureau Senior Economist Jay Rempe says in addition to low commodity prices farmers are now feeling the impact of the bomb cyclones.

Estimates put flooded related livestock losses at $400 million and crop losses at $440 million in Nebraska. Rempe says those are just preliminary figures and will likely rise.

He says with all the economic stress, some producers will exit the business.

Rempe remains hopeful Congress will come through and approve some type of disaster aid. He says federal and state lawmakers need to work together to help farmers and ranchers through these difficult times.
