USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has released a report linking contaminated flexible intermediate bulk containers to the spread of the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. National Pork Board’s Vice President of Science and Technology Dr. Dave Pyburn says the problem with the tote bags is they’re used more than once for several different products and aren’t cleaned.
Pyburn says although the study indicates PEDV may have come into the U.S. this way there’s no overwhelming proof of it.
He says now that the study has been released it’s up to the government to decide how to fix this problem.
Pyburn says the options are to either not re-use the tote bags or if they are re-used to clean and disinfect them between uses, especially if they’re used for animal feed.
