The United States and Argentina are close to completing a trade agreement that would result in reopening two way trade in beef for the first time in nearly 20 years. United States Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner says while his group supports trade deals does have concerns with this one.
He says one of his group’s main concerns with Argentina is their problems with foot and mouth disease.
Graner says the other trade pact they’re monitoring is one with Brazil which has had more problems with F-M-D and other issues than Argentina has had.
Graner says most of the concerns his group has with trade deals is making sure the quotas are fair and that sound science and safety standards are followed by all the participants. Under the upcoming pact with Argentina, shipments of beef from the U.S. would not be limited while there would be a limit of 20,000 metric tons of Argentine beef coming to the U.S.
