Senate legislation was introduced Wednesday to ease electronic logging device and hours of service regulations for haulers of livestock and insects. Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse led a large group of Senators introducing the Transporting Livestock Across America Safety Act. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association Policy Director Lia Biondo says the measure calls for more reasonable hours of service and logging device rules for livestock haulers.

She says without the changes called for in the legislation, animal welfare and security is at risk.

Biondo says while there isn’t a companion measure in the House yet, given the wide support in the Senate and interest among many House members, she expects one soon.

Biondo says two of the key components of the Senate bill exempt loading and unloading from hours of service, provides that hours of service and ELD requirements aren’t applicable until after a driver travels more than 300 air miles from their source.
