Now is a good time for cattle producers to test their herds for Trichomoniasis. South Dakota State Veterinarian Dr. Dustin Oedekoven says trich is a disease that can cause significant losses in a cattle operation.
He says the disease is spread from bulls to cows through breeding and can result in early term abortions.
Oedekoven says the good news is it’s easy to prevent trich.
Oedekoven says cattle producers can get more information on the state rules for the disease on the Animal Industry Board’s website. Non-virgin bulls must be tested negative for trichomoniasis prior to being sold, loaned or leased in South Dakota for breeding purposes and no non-virgin and non-pregnant female cattle may be imported, loaned, leased nor acquired for breeding purposes in South Dakota.
