America’s cattle producers want the U.S. to move ahead soon on a bilateral trade deal with Japan. That sense of urgency has been highlighted by the recent Japan, European Union Free Trade agreement and with Japan moving ahead with the Trans Pacific Partnership trade pact with 10 countries excluding the United States. South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association President Larry Stomprud says now would be a great opportunity for President Trump to talk about a deal since he’s in Japan and South Korea this week.
He understands Trump’s concerns over trade deficit problems but wishes he would take agriculture’s needs into account more fully.
Stomprud has confidence in the ag negotiators the Trump administration has in place but is hoping they won’t waste any time in getting some type of agreement with Japan.
The remaining TPP countries are expected to come to some type of agreement this week or next.
