Nebraska State Senator Steve Erdman of Bayard plans to launch a petition drive for property tax relief in time for the 2018 election. Nebraska Cattlemen Association President Troy Stowater is disappointed legislators didn’t address the need for property tax relief during the regular session.

He’s also disappointed lawmakers don’t seem to understand the impact high property taxes are having on the state’s largest industry.

Erdman believes the first step in providing property tax relief is to make significant cuts in state spending. Stowater says state government does need to improve its efficiency.

Erdman says two years ago he considered doing a petition drive to eliminate property taxes. He says he considered it because of frustration of rising tax bills on agricultural land.
