United States and Japanese trade officials are aiming to reach a trade deal soon, possibly next month. That’s following talks in the U.S. Japan’s Economy Minister said headway was made in those recent discussions and the goal for a deal is in sight. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner says that gives his group’s members optimism going forward.
He says his organization supports the President in his strategy of seeking bilateral deals rather than multilateral trade agreements.
Japan’s Prime Minister is scheduled to meet with President Donald Trump in September so if an agreement is reached then, Graner says that would be good timing for U.S. cattle producers.
U.S. Trade Representative Robert LIghthizer and Japan’s Economy Minister are expected to meet again later this month at the Group of seven summit of advanced nations in France August 24 through the 26.
