The fourth round of trade talks between the United States and United Kingdom just wrapped up this month. Another round of discussions is planned for mid-October. Both sides are reporting good progress. That’s encouraging according to Eric Jennings, President of the South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association. He says U.S. trade officials have been working on this for some time.
Chief Ag Trade negotiator Greg (dowd) Doud says he’s confident they’ll be able to talk trade issues with the U.K.. going forward, those being tariffs, biotech and market opportunity. Jennings says if the U.S. can capture that market it would be a great benefit for America’s cattle producers.
Currently the U.K. imports $4.5 billion of meat from the European Union. Doud says if those issues can be worked out, then the U.S. will have a real shot at the U.K. market. Jennings says the hope now is if a deal can be reached with the U.K. it’ll help with trade talks with other potential customers.
Trade talks between the U.S. and U.K..started in May of this year and since then enough progress has been made that now the discussions are in the advanced stages.
