Cattle market reforms to help independent producers get better prices may be gaining some momentum in Congress.
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says his bill to mandate regional thresholds for the level of negotiated cattle packers must buy may be given time on the Senate floor. At least that’s according to co-sponsor Montana Senator Jon Tester.
Grassley says the other alternative is to try to include it on the Omnibus.
President Biden, during his State of the Union speech, called out the meat packing industry for the lack of competition and has moved to fix it and the concentration in other sectors of agriculture.
