Cattle Industry Monitoring Fake Meat Court Cases

The American Civil Liberties Union along with a Plant Based Meat company are challenging an Arkansas law that prevents plant based or cell derived alternative protein products from being labeled as meat. The groups are saying the law violates the first and fourteenth amendments by censoring free speech. NCBA Board member, and South Dakota cattle producer Todd Wilkinson who’s also an attorney says the case could have far reaching impacts for beef producers across the country.

He says the cattle industry has been watching the fake meat issue for some time.

Wilkinson says Arkansas isn’t the only state where this issue has surfaced and could cause beef producers problems down the road.

The Arkansas labeling law goes into effect. Similar laws in other states were passed this year and also face legal challenges. Those include laws enacted in South Dakota, Missouri, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
