Cattle Groups Pushing For Beef Industry Reforms

The Organization for Competitive Markets along with R-CALF and the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association at their meeting in Florida last week talked about reforms to the Beef Industry. R-Calf CEO Bill Bullard says they all decided to back the Grassley-Tester legislation calling for packers to purchase 50 percent of their cattle from the spot market. They also want Mandatory Country of Origin Labeling re-instated.

He says there must be transparency restored to the cash cattle market in order to fix the current problem.

Bullard says the three cattle groups will be asking members of Congress to support the Grassley-Tester bill.

R-CALF, OCM and USCA also all want to see a breakup of the big four meatpacking companies in order to address cash market and concentration concerns.
