The USDA is seeking public comments on the labeling of meat and poultry products made using cultured cells derived from animals. Nebraska Cattlemen Association Executive Vice President Pete McClymont says putting proper rules in for those meats is an important step in truthful labeling which his group’s members wholly support.

Under the rule making process the Food and Drug Administration will transfer oversight of the cell harvest stage to the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service which McClymont says is the proper move.

McClymont says there is a 60 day public comment period and he’s encouraging his group’s members and other livestock producers to submit their views on this important issue.

An agreement was made in 2019 for the USDA and FDA to jointly oversee the production of human food products made using animal cell culture technology and derived from the cells of livestock and poultry.
