Cattle Group Says Wait For WTO Before Fixing COOL

Speaking to American Farm Bureau Delegates this week, Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack said Country of Origin Labeling will have to be fixed by Congress. U.S. Cattlemen Association’s Executive Vice President Jess Peterson says he senses the Secretary’s frustration but says he and Congress need to wait until the WTO rules on the latest appeal case involving COOL before taking action.
Peterson says Congress has enough issues on their plate and shouldn’t do anything definitively on COOL until more information comes out with the WTO ruling.
While Peterson wants Congress to wait, American Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman hopes they don’t wait too long. He says eventually they’re going to have make some tough decisions.
