Recently, Missouri became the first state in the nation to pass a law prohibiting food manufacturers from using the word meat on products made without animal flesh. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner, a North Dakota rancher says he’s pleased they’ve moved forward with that and thinks more states will follow suit.
He’s not surprised though that a vegetarian food company is challenging Missouri’s new law in court. Graner says his group isn’t opposed to lab or cultured meat companies from producing their products, they just need to be labeled separately from meat.
Graner says manufactured or lab produced products don’t meet the definition of meat and thorough research needs to be conducted to show what exact ingredients have gone into that lab produced product so consumers know exactly what they’re getting.
Graner says U.S. Cattlemen continue to weigh in with the federal government on proper labeling of meat.
