The United States and Japan agreed this week to accelerate trade talks to advance a trade agreement. United States Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner says Japan is the top market for America’s cattle producers and he’s pleased the Trump administration is moving forward on the bilateral discussions.

He says with the U.S. left out of the Comprehensive Trans Pacific Partnership, other countries have a leg up on the U.S. for trade with Japan. Graner says as a result the U.S cattle industry is up against large tariffs that gives those other countries a big advantage.

Graner says the U.S. has a high quality beef product that the Japanese want and getting that market solidified is critical for America’s cattle producers going forward.

Under the CTPP, Japan is able to import 60 percent more beef from those nations over the the U.S.
