The Agriculture Policy Analysis Center at the University of Tennessee has released new report that urges the return of mandatory country of origin labeling for beef, pork and bison. Center officials say COOL could give consumers information they need to buy products that meet their individual buying preferences. Nebraska Cattlemen Association President Ken Herz says the problem with M-COOL is if its reinstated would invite trade retaliation.
He says a better approach to letting consumer know what they’re getting would be a voluntary country of origin labeling program.
Herz says according to a study done by Kansas State University, when M-COOL was in place, there wasn’t any increase in beef demand.
M-COOL supporter say that retaliation on the labeling law could be avoided if Congress would pass a new law rather than re-adding beef to the old law.
